[Replay] Lessons a 150 lb. furball taught the world

REPLAY – My last radio show of 2024

The above audio link - see it at the top? - is a replay to my radio show, Best of Laguna Beach,” which airs live on Mondays at 2 pm PT/5 pm ET.

Nope. I’m not in the wrong Substack blog - I know you folks here at Golden Ticket will enjoy this “Laguna Beach” audio replay on a whole different level. In this radio episode, I took a bit of a detour from my regularly scheduled “Best of Laguna Beach” show to wrap up the year by telling two personal (and sort of funny) stories.

How I “manifested” living in Laguna Beach

My backyard view in Laguna Beach.

In my radio show, I first talked about how most of the residents here CHOSE Laguna Beach for their permanent residence … me included.

Choosing is way different than just being planted, transferred or natively grown anywhere. When you choose, you make a decision for something that you prefer. That decision, however THEN requires action.

How I actually arrived here is an astounding story. Bob Proctor used to chortle about this and say it was all his fault. And, although Bob never steered me wrong about anything in the 27 years of working together and being great friends, he definitely steered me into Laguna Beach in a most unusual way.

Lessons from a furball that impacted thousands of lives

Then, I shared an old Christmas letter I wrote way back in 2003 about my beloved great Pyrenees, Merlin. He passed away on Dec. 8th, 2003, and it took me a couple weeks to gather myself enough to write about it in my annual Christmas letter to friends and family.

Merlin’s first Christmas at 10 months.

Merlin was my 12-year companion who moved multiple times with me … four time, alone, to and within Laguna Beach.

Our first Christmas in Laguna Beach when Merlin was 8.

With my permission, this particular Christmas letter about Merlin ended up being shared by Bob Proctor’s son, Brian, to a list of thousands of people right after Christmas Day, 2003. It generated thousands of email responses directly to me. What I had written addressed the greatest lessons Merlin taught me, and apparently those teaching moments from the lovable furball struck a chord with people all over the world. It was amazing what people shared with me - tales of their own dear pets passing away and, even better, how Merlin’s lessons changed up their lives.

So, the Christmas letter eventually became a small e-book, and this is what I chose to read to all of my lovely listeners in my last radio show of the year.

Merlin’s last Christmas with me at age 11. He almost made it to his 12th Christmas with me.

Here’s the e-book if you’re interested, but I do hope you enjoy hearing my audio tale as well!

Cheers to your New Year – and your new decisions (and action) ahead in 2025!

P.S. Bob Proctor, by the way, really enjoyed knowing Merlin. If you’ll remember Bob’s beloved Pomeranians, Merlin was about 70 times’ the size and quite a bit more fluff.

On a couple occasions, Bob would be in L.A. for some sort of conference, and Merlin and I would drive up in my convertible to meet him. We would pull into the fancy hotel valet’s circle and out would come Bob, dapper as always in what he called “casual wear,” usually a cashmere sweater and perfectly pleated trousers. He’d greet Merlin warmly there in the back seat, give him a scratch on the head and say, “Well, hello there, Merlin. And where are we off to lunch today?” Then he’d pop into the passenger seat and off the three of us would go.
